I just came across this article, and thought it was great….
Loblaw, Sobey’s, Metro, Wal-Mart, Costco, Safeway, Overwaitea and Federated Cooperatives are all targeted by Greenpeace in a new 56-page report, Out of Stock: Canadian Supermarkets and the Future of Seafood.
The document says that 75 percent of the world’s fisheries are either “fully exploited,” “over exploited” or “significantly depleted.” Large, commercially valuable species are already 90 per cent gone, and Canadian aquaculture (fish farming) has yet to provide a sustainable seafood solution and, in some cases, exacerbates pressure on wild stocks.
Supermarkets sell 63 percent of the seafood eaten in Canada, including many vulnerable species detailed in Greenpeace’s “Red List.”
